Shades of Death Trail is not as scary as it sounds. Shades of Death Trail is known for bird watching. The 15,000 acre Hickory Run State Park lies in the western foothills of the Pocono Plateau. We’ll hike the 1.3-mile Shades of Death Trail as it wiggles up a cascading stream. This hike can be shortened to 2.6 miles. For hardier souls, we’ll continue onward and return to the parking lot by way of Sand Spring Trail, for a total of 3.8 miles. Sturdy footwear and a walking stick are strongly recommended. The hike is appropriate for children of all ages. Dogs on leash are welcome. Bring binoculars and /or cameras for wildlife and spring flower observations. Bathrooms: A portable toilet is at the Park Office. Directions: US-22 W to 1-476 N, take exit 87/PA-903. (Must have E-Z Pass to exit and enter I-476 here.) Continue on PA-903 N for 3.2 miles and turn left onto PA 534 for 6.8 miles to the Park Office. We will meet in the parking area, located on the left, next to the Park Office. More parking is just down the road near a bridge. OR from I-476 take Exit 95 to I-80 W for one exit Exit #274 (2.6 miles) toward Hickory Run State Park. Follow Route 534 east for 5.2 miles to the Park Office. Parking on right.
