Interested in seeing some migrating raptors? Join us as we explore Hawk Mountain, starting on the Silhouette Trail, a half mile ADA approved flat surface, that passes many silhouettes of raptors on its way to the South Lookout. The next half-mile up to the North Lookout is more challenging—the trail is rocky, and there are rock steps to climb. If you prefer to skip this portion of the hike, you’ll still have plenty to look at from the South Lookout and at the Visitors Center. In addition to stunning views, hundreds of raptors migrate over the mountain in October, making it one of the top bird-watching areas in the world. The hike is appropriate for children of all ages. Dogs are not permitted. Sturdy footwear is suggested and a walking stick would be very helpful as well. Bring binoculars and/or camera to observe the raptors. Directions: From I-78 take Exit 35 (Lenhartsville), and turn left at bottom of exit ramp onto PA-143 N. Drive 3.7 miles on PA-143 to Hawk Mountain Road (Sunoco station is on the right) and turn left onto Hawk Mountain Road. Travel 6.8 miles on Hawk Mt. Road to the Hawk Mt. Sanctuary. Turn left into the parking area. We will meet in front of the Visitors Center.
